Who We Are
The Literacy Center is a social benefit organization in Evansville, Indiana. We have a 501 c 3 tax status. We benefit the community by educating adults by improving their reading abilities, high school equivalency (formerly GED) preparation and workplace skills.
We support our programming by grants, individual and community donations and special events.
Our signature event is SCRABBLE Smackdown held each February on the fourth Saturday of the month.
MISSION
The Literacy Center is dedicated to improving adult literacy and education thereby strengthening our community.
VISION
To create a community of lifelong learners who have the opportunity to flourish in all aspects of life.
What We Do
The Literacy Center seeks to solve the problem of illiteracy within our community by
offering free, remedial reading instruction to adults who need help with adult
literacy. We offer literacy education through computer-based instruction, an education
coordinator, classroom instruction and private tutoring. Our volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adult learners, teaching them literacy skills that help adult learners reach their
individual goals. The tutoring sessions are tailored to the individual's needs and
include using functional material such as grocery store ads, employment applications,
medical information, checkbooks, and textbooks. All materials are provided free of charge
to the tutors and learners. We also offer a high school equivalency preparation class.
This class is designed to offer review of basics of grammar, writing, social studies,
science and basic math. The class helps students to improve their reading
comprehension and offers a path to additional classes. We correlate our services to essential life skills of focus and self-control, perspective taking, communication, making
connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges and self-directed engaged learning.
