Who We Are
The Vanderburgh Humane Society, Inc. (VHS), a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization was founded in 1957 to provide protection for homeless animals, intervention for animals in abusive environments, and community education to encourage prevention of animal abuse and pet overpopulation.
VHS receives no tax-based funding, therefore depending on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, then hopefully expand, the needed services it offers. VHS moved into its current facility in 2004. The 20,000 square foot facility allows us to provide a multitude of services and an exceptional standard of care. Our Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic opened in 2007 and has provided over 100,000 spay/neuter surgeries.
What We Do
VHS leads our community in eliminating pet overpopulation through spay/neuter, adoption, and humane education. Alter. Adopt. Adore.
VHS provides low cost spay/neuter services for the public and other animal agencies through our onsite low cost spay & neuter clinic. Community members are able to access low cost spay/neuter surgery services for community or feral trapped cats. Low cost vaccine clinics are scheduled throughout the year to help local community members have access to basic vaccinations.
Pet food assistance is provided for needy families. Donations of pet food from the public are gathered throughout the month and then distributed to those in need monthly.
For those that find themselves in domestic violence situations, VHS offers victims fleeing abusive situations free room & board for their pets for up to 30 days. We partner with local agencies that assist domestic violence victims.
VHS is dedicated to educating our community through humane education programs. Schools, scouts, businesses, etc. benefit from education programs on a variety of pet care topics for adults or children of all ages.
Happy Tails, a resale shop, is located in a portion of the VHS shelter. Sales from donated new or gently used home goods, knick knacks, furniture, and more go directly to support the animals at VHS. Happy Tails is open on Fridays & Saturdays from 10am-4pm.
Cardio for Canines and Mutt's Morning Out give the public an opportunity to provide extra enrichment and exercise for our shelter dogs. Cardio for Canines is on Saturday mornings from 8am-9:30am. Mutt's Morning Out program is Tuesday-Friday from 10am-noon.
VHS encourages those looking for a new pet to add to their family to visit our shelter full of adoptable dogs, cats, rabbits, and other pets. Adoption counselors work to find compatible matches for potential adopters. Cats can also be adopted from River Kitty cat cafe located in downtown Evansville.
To accomplish the mission of VHS, we rely on volunteers. We are grateful for our volunteers and their commitment to help us provide the proper care and treatment of animals while they are in our care. There are many tasks that volunteers participate in, from basic daily animal care to doing education outreaches to helping in our resale shop to folding laundry to fostering animals too young to be at the shelter.
